SUSAN MIKULA: American Vale
solo exhibition of photography

Pittsfield, Massachusetts grew on the spine of the massive industrial facilities of the General Electric Corporation. Now photographer Susan Mikula revisits them in American Vale, finding the unromanticized, present, physical beauty of these sites and the landscapes they shape.

The artists in COUPLES maintain separate professional identities, independent gallery representation and, in some cases, studios located quite far apart. Some of the couples work in adjacent spaces and occasionally create collaborative works. The unifying factor between them all is a high level of mutual support and ongoing intellectual inspiration. In their statements, many artists discuss how their personal relationship affects their work and lives.

SERGEI ISUPOV
Androgyny

Featuring selected works from "Androgyny", Isupov's 2009 solo show of large scale sculpture and works on paper. Widely collected privately and publicly in the US, Isupov grew up in Kiev, Ukraine, and now lives between Talinn, Estonia and his home base in Western Massachusetts. Described as an "Erotic Surrealist", Isupov states:

"I’m not sure I create them, perhaps they create me.”

MICHAEL ZELEHOSKI
ReUse, ReCycled, ReObjectified

New work by the young artist Michael Zelehoski includes "flattened" wooden folding chairs and produce boxes. Zelehoski's work embodies the concept of our upcoming group show "ReObjectification: Art + Object" in which artists were invited to share their source images,concept or actual materials. A recent winner of the Massachusetts Cultural Council Artist Fellowship, Zelehoski will be a summer resident artist at Hancock Shaker Village using the site and workshops to ReExamine Shaker style object making.

CHRIS ANTEMANN
Battle of the Britches

Featuring new works from her series inspired by 17c Staffordshire figurines. Antemann recently received the first place 2010 Virgina A Groot Foundation Grant and was chosen for the BAM Biennial to produce "Seven Deadly Sins".

"Investigating the struggle for dominance and playing off historical stereotypes of marriage, courtship and coupling, this series exposes the tension created when two individuals try to become one. As long as there is wedlock, tying the knot, getting hitched; this battle, a source of humor and entertainment for centuries, rages on."

In 2009, Antemann began working with photographer Kendrick Moholt, to isolate and compose details from her sculptures and contrast the scale of the individual figurines 10 – 12" to the faces and figures featured in the prints, 36 x 26". The series will be onview at Art Chicago 2010.

PAUL GRAUBARD
Stories from the Bible and Other Places

Featuring selected works from his current show that depict personal experiences, ethnic traditions and Biblical stories using acrylic paint, fabric, paper and objects arranged on canvas and wood.

Considered an Outsider Artist, Graubard employs rich colors and simple forms in complex compositions to create narratives. Not formally trained as an artist, he worked as a teacher, professor, and a psychologist until abandoning his practice and working as a painter full time. Graubard's upbringing in a traditional Romanian household and his interests in music, religion, fantasy and folk stories are the subjects of his paintings. His work has been shown at and is in the collection of the American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore, MD.

MAGGIE MAILER
ReObjectification: Painting

In 2009, Mailer spent two months as artist in residence at the Berkshire Museum, Pittsfield, MA examining the museum's collection of 18th and 19th century landscape and portraiture. The work featured at Art Chicago is selected from the the paintings that were produced during her residency.

Mailer is currently working towards a solo show at Ferrin Gallery, summer 2010 that continues to build on this experience.

SHANNON TRUDELL
ReObjectification: Drawing

THE SOVRAPPOSIZIONE SERIES

Four new drawings from the series that began "as an attempt to demonstrate how the passage of time affects perceptions of beauty." Using herself as a model, her research led her to compare anatomy of the male - particularly popular male forms found throughout the Greek and Roman Renaissance art - with the anatomy of the modern female.

A young artist studying in Venice, Italy, Trudell produces meticulous, delicate drawings.

DAVID POPPIE
ReObjectification: Object

A classic "ReObjectifier" Poppie's work involves the reclaiming of disposable objects in mass to create two and three dimensional works. Paint sticks and colored pencils are his chosen material/medium for this series but his palette includes ordinary objects such as tea bags, matchbook strikes, plastic cutlery, cassettes and records.

" These items are generally disregarded and ignored by the everyday person. Through the gathering of the discards of contemporary culture, I ask the viewer to reconsider the function and value of these objects. I also reassign their value by re-contextualizing them by creating a piece of art from them. Besides the formal issues that interest me, based in the Minimalist school, that are utilized, I also am making a commentary on the disposable nature of contemporary culture.”

MICHAEL BORONIEC & GERIT GRIMM were resident artists at Project Art in Cummington, MA this past winter. Selected works are onview through April 24th in The Things They Left Behind

MICHAEL BORONIEC, a Berkshire native, lives and works in Pittsfield, teaching high school art by day and sculpting in ceramics, mixed media and printmaking by night. Michael Boroniec's current series of sculptures was produced at Project Art in honor of his childhood friend, a West Point graduate, currently on his second tour of duty in Afghanistan. Using the opportunity to work in a new environment surrounded by other art professionals, Boroniec chose to re-objectify, in ceramic materials, the uniforms and equipment that will travel with Captain Russo into the war zone. An ardent pacifist, this series builds on his interest to use his work to send a message.

PANEL DISCUSSION: ReObjectification in Postmodern Ceramics

Join artists Anat Shiftan, Gerit Grimm, Christa Assad and Greenwich House Pottery director Sarah Archer for a

conversation about postmodernism in ceramics. With its rich history and ability to mimic other materials, ceramics is an ideal medium for the interpretation and re-contextualization of one object into another. Whether by direct reference, the use of found objects in ceramic sculpture or realistic rendering, artists can layer meaning into their work. The artists, all represented by Ferrin Gallery, discuss their various techniques for appropriating imagery and form in clay and the inspiration behind their choices.

Sarah Archer holds a BA from Swarthmore College and an MA in the history of decorative arts from the Bard Graduate

Center, and was a curatorial assistant at the Museum of Arts and Design before joining GHP.

ReObjectification: Material

GORDON CHANDLER

Using recycled steel to create recognizable domestic objects, Chandler has spent over thirty years making mildly humorous domestic objects from "road kill" metal. John Deere tractor forgotten cast offs. Welding parts together, he turns them into parts become "Deer Heads" and steel chemical drums become "Kimonos". Scouring scrap yards and metal culled from roadsides, Chandler works intuitively to pull color and form from forgotten cast offs. Welding parts together, he turns them into chairs, quilts and iconic objects.

Chandler has made a career of ReObjectification.

ReObjectification: Eroticism and Sexuality

SCANDAL, SEX & ETHICS?
Traditional ceramic figurines were often used to convey "G" rated content. This format is easily uprated and updated to "R" and "X" in the hands of contemporary artists. Humorous use of the implied and obvious "tall tale (tail)" combined with "tongue in cheek" ironic wit is at the core of the work by Dean Adams, Chris Antemann and Gerit Grimm.

Boroniec earned his BFA from RISD with a concentration in Ceramic Material Sciences.

The title of the show refers to the ongoing NEA program, The Big Read, currently underway in Pittsfield in which the community explores the book "The Things They Carried" by Tim O'Brien, through programming in the schools, libraries and cultural venues throughout the city.

In Rural Intelligence, Dan Shaw writes "Michael Boroniec calls himself an Art Soldier, which is fitting since he’s on the front lines of Pittsfield’s cultural revolution."

GERIT GRIMM

Born and raised in East Germany, Grimm came to work at Project Art this winter most recently from Lincoln Nebraska. Having come to the US to pursue her MFA at Alfred University, she has been a resident artist at the The LH Project in Joseph, Oregon, The Archie Bray Foundation in Helena, Montana, and Arts in Industry at the Kohler factory in Sheboygan, Wisconsin.

Like Boroniec, the residency at Project Art enabled her to work among ceramic and art professionals who live and pass through the Berkshires. Meeting other ceramicists, visual artists, visiting curators and working closely with gallerist, Leslie Ferrin, Grimm's experience was an immersion in what The Berkshires and Western Massachusetts offers - a network and proximity to the world's finest cultural institutions in the region, nearby New York and Boston. She focused on works in upcoming group exhibitions, ReObjectification, The Hermaphrodites: Living in Two Worlds and in the process explored new ideas and addressed technical issues.

"In The Things They Left Behind", Grimm presents selections from her residency that include a collaborative works with potter and pattern painter, Megan Hart and selected works from Grimm's recent exhibition in Philadelphia "Sugar Coated: The Candy Shop".

Astrid Heimer writing in Berkshire Fine Arts, "Female and male figures all resemble Gerit in some way. Her dressed or nude figurines are placed in fantastic settings, but she denies any relationship to the 'Gebrueder Grimm' (Grimm's fairy tales)."

MEGAN HART & GERIT GRIMM

A studio visit inspired a series of figurines based on Meissen "erotic" dancers and hostesses. Working together, Grimm produced the figures and painted the males, Megan Hart, known for her fluid floral pattern painting on functional porcelain, dressed the women with flowery clothing.

GALLERY EXPO: Ferrin Gallery joins a select group of nationally known galleries showing at NCECA in Philadelphia at The Marriott (adjacent to the convention center) in an exhibit open to the public.

Each year NCECA, National Conference of Educators in the Ceramic Arts, hosts an annual convergence that attracts as many as 4,000 artists, professionals and students. This year's conference in Philadelphia opens Tuesday, March 30 and continues through Saturday, April 2.

The gallery's focus @ the expo is on American Studio Pottery featuring an in-depth collection by emerging and established potters from across the country.

NEW WORK by Seth Rainville

SETH RAINVILLE of New Bedford, MA is one of our emerging talents. "Inkware", his term for narrative style painting on woodfired porcelain, provides a perfect format for this born storyteller. His current series focuses on tales of the sea and the whaling industry. A graduate of UMASS Dartmouth, he was a winter resident artist at Watershed Center for Ceramic Arts 2006-7 followed by a year in Chris Gustin's apprenticeship program. These new pieces follow his "sell out" introductcion at SOFA Chicago in The Illusculptors.

STEVE GODFREY of Anchorage, AK is best known for using birds as decorative elements on celebratory porcealin objects. However, he continues to flirt with the mundane by producing functional pottery that "balances between the images of ornate 'Sunday dinner' ware and the trustworthy 'coffee mug in the car' ware."

PETER SCHERZER uses the teapot as an object to explore the combination of "Baroque excess with basic utility". Currently the studio manager at Northern Clay Center in Minneapolis, Scherzer graduated from Alfred University in 1999 followed by a two year artist residency at The Archie Bray Foundation.

While most are functional, some stretch the limits by exploring the conceptual aspect of the form. Christa Assad does just this with her current series that uses architecturally interesting structures as inspiration for her latest works. These pieces are offered as a preview for our upcoming, "ReObjectification", a group show of 2D/3D works in all media to be presented at SOFA and the gallery this spring.

The Hermaphrodites: Living In Two Worlds focuses on figural sculpture that both embodies the literal definition of hermaphrodites (encompassing both genders) and the conceptual nature of the term as it applies to sculpture that can be categorized equally as contemporary fine art sculpture or decorative art. The exhibition concentrates on contemporary artists working with ceramics, who also adopt other processes, materials, and techniques commonly found outside of their discipline.

WEXLER GALLERY is an internationally recognized gallery exhibiting the finest in art and design, located at 201 North Third Street in the historical district of Old City Philadelphia. The gallery is proud to showcase some of the world's most esteemed artists working in the fields of contemporary glass, paintings, and design, alongside emerging talent from these fields.

The Hermaphrodites: Living In Two Worlds coincides with the 44th annual National Council for Education on the Ceramic Arts Conference (NCECA) in Philadelphia (March 31-April 3, 2010).

Strong Subject - Strong Sculpture

Twenty artists explore the subject by making connections to concepts such as Peter Pan - Red Weldon Sandlin, eroticism and gender identity - Chris Antemann, psychology - Tip Toland, anthropomorphism - Jason Briggs.

According curator Leslie Ferrin:
"The artists in this exhibition produce sculpture that is categorically often confusing when placed in private or public collections. Depending on the curatorial mission of the institution or vision of the collector, works by these artists can be found in contemporary collections of fine art, decorative arts and even at times, design. The title of the show was chosen to first draw attention from its social meaning and then challenge its interpretation from various metaphorical perspectives."

JASON HOUSTON: Family of Mine
Solo exhibition of large scale photographs that explore the sometimes tense dichotomies that define American family life.

The show features eleven large scale prints of moments captured at Houston's family get-togethers between 2002 and 2007. The images, although intimate and personal, are poignant reflections of relationships, traditions, values and family dynamics that are universally identifiable.

NEW WORK by Michael McCarthy

MICHAEL MCCARTHY is a local potter arriving in the Berkshires ten years ago to apprentice with Mark Shapiro and presently working in the resident studios at Project Art in Cummington. His functional pottery concentrates on simple, reserved forms fired in his newly completed wood kiln to produce rich, natural surfaces. Intending his work to be used, McCarthy is focusing this spring on tableware and will be one of our featured "Dish" makers this summer in the Dish & Dine series that pairs local food with local artists presented on locally made dishes.

The Industry of Making Pots

“Today in any definition of the craftsman there is still inherent the idea of the man who makes things by his hands, one at a time with his skill, his tools, his intuitive gifts of form, color, and use of materials and techniques.” These words, written by John Smith, appeared in the British Journal of Aesthetics in 1971. This definition of the craftsman (and by implication the handmade) is quite indicative of the attitude that fueled the crafts movement in the second half of the 20th century here in the United States. The GI Bill had educated thousands of men, many of whom became potters who were performing all the steps needed to produce each piece they made. At the same time, a large educated consumer class emerged that was eagerly seeking relief from the anonymous goods that had flooded the market. It was a perfect match and the result was a time that was rich in production and also in dollars. This rich relationship drove the marketplace and in turn defined how most clay pieces were produced.

However, this make-it-all-yourself approach wasn’t all that was going on in the clay world. For some working in the clay field, it was appropriate to produce pieces using industrial tools and thinking. Garth Clark, writing in the catalog Object Factory II for the exhibition of the same name at the Museum of Art and Design in New York City, reminds us of the role of industry in our field. “Applied art as a critical movement has begun to take on its own character, not better but different from craft. Most importantly, its processes, even if they produce unique objects, are drawn from the factory floor.”

Beginning with the Arts and Crafts movement at the beginning of 19th century, the applied arts have grown in importance and recognition. The Bauhaus philosophy, and the work of many of the designer crafts people who worked and studied there, have driven the applied arts since the middle of the 19th century.

Ceramic history is filled with artists using various industrial techniques and approaches to produce their work. Eva Zeisel immediately comes to mind as a leader in the industrial ceramics field. Born in Budapest in 1906, she was a design force throughout most of the 20th century. Although her pieces were produced by other workers using molds made from her originals, her respect for and understanding of clay was always evident. After all, she began her career by apprenticing herself to a traditional potter in Germany, attaining journeyman status and working in a number of factories before she immigrated to the United States in 1938. Although now 103 years old, she continues to design sensuous pieces that are produced in porcelain by James Klein and David Reid (www.kleinreid.com).

Another believer in the philosophy that the hands making the object don’t have to be the hands of the person who designed it was potter and designer Edith Heath. A one-woman show in the mid-forties at San Francisco’s Palace of the Legion of Honor introduced her understated pottery, and her simple pieces were picked up for sale in Gump’s San Francisco store. Subsequently, she founded Heath Ceramics (www.heathceramics.com) in 1948 and the company quickly became known for its mid-century modern dinnerware and architectural tiles.

Russell Wright was a major star of 20th century industrial ceramics. Unlike Zeisel and Heath, he did not have a background in ceramics, but rather was a designer. Clearly he had an understanding and appreciation for clay, as is reflected in his American Modern dinnerware line that became the largest selling dinnerware up to that time. These designer craftsmen, along with their counterparts in the studio, were part of the engine driving the crafts movement that began to explode in the 1970s.

Makers and consumers alike have contributed to the natural evolution of our field over the last 40 years. In 2010 we find ourselves in the era of the “not so hand made.” The consumers are younger and bring very different product preferences and shopping habits to the marketplace. This younger consumer group, often called the Millennials, numbers about 71 million. The Internet is one of their major shopping tools, this consumer doesn’t have to touch to decide-just click. Their motivations are also quite different, they are probably not collectors but what might be called problem solvers. They need a gift, something to eat from, or have an empty shelf or wall. They are likely to become repeat customers if they find the shopping experience easy and pleasant and if they get the right feedback about their purchases. The Internet sites Artful Home, Amazon, and Etsy are just a few of the preferred shopping sites for this gang.

Potters today who have freed themselves from the constraint that everything must be made by their hands are exploring numerous other avenues to produce their work and get it to market. The models run from a potter working alone using industrial equipment in the studio to the clay designer who, once the piece is designed, never touches it again.

Nancy Pizarro and Andrew Witt began Circa Ceramics, (www.circaceramics.com) in 1999. They are life and work partners who make all their pieces themselves in their studio in a refitted industrial building on the north side of Chicago. They use only porcelain, which is either shaped using a jigger/jolly system or slip casting. This team didn’t turn to industrial processes to increase production, rather it was the look and the feel of the pieces they were producing and the level of consistency demanded by one of their first clients (a coffee company) that sent them in that direction. They have gone on to create a line of functional pieces that get their power from clean forms, vibrant color, and quirky decoration. Soon they realized they needed an efficient way to put client’s information on the pieces. Again they turned to industry for a solution and began screen printing to create decals. Andrew points out, “the major benefit of screen printing is its use of vector files that can be sent via email directly from the client so we can begin doing our work of producing the end result.” Mastery of this technology allowed them to create decals from their own designs that are used to decorate the surfaces of their brightly colored pieces. “For us, what keeps all this exciting is that we have been given a tiny glimpse of what the tableware industry is like,” they observe. “And this industry, much like the fashion industry, has trained people’s perception of what pottery should and shouldn’t be. It is through the use of industrial processes that we can enter into this world and play upon these perceptions.” Enter that world they have, and built a line that appeals to the forward looking consumer who is drawn to the vibrant colors and quirky decal images. Circa Ceramics markets their work at local retail shows, but in keeping with their interest in up-to-the-minute production techniques, it logically follows that they would make Etsy.com their major marketing tool.

A light-filled studio in Boston is the home base for Jill Rosenwald (www.jillrosenwald.com). She is a designer with an understanding of, and interest in, functional ceramic forms who sought a way to get her images on the surfaces of functional pottery. Not a potter herself, Jill found potters who could throw the forms she had drawn on paper. Today, all the pieces are thrown by a skilled potter working to Rosenwald’s specifications in her studio. She also creates the surface designs on paper and then works with her painter to transfer them to the ceramic surface. They work through a series of trials until the design suits her. The finished design is then added to her line and each subsequent piece is thrown and then glazed by this team. This arrangement is similar to the structure of many production potteries of the Arts and Crafts movement. Rosenwald continues to create new designs as she oversees the production of her work and continues to develop the marketing aspects of her growing business.

The Queens, New York, studio of James Klein and David Reid is an up-to-the-minute example of the use of molds. They attribute their interest in production pottery to their early years in Ohio, where they were exposed to the production pottery by Hall China Company, Homer Laughlin China Company, Roseville Pottery Company, and Weller Pottery. Each piece they produce is first carved by them from plaster. They use this master to create the molds that they use to produce the final product. In this studio, the use of molds has a place other than to speed production. “As our aesthetic developed, molds and plaster simply became the best way to make the thing we were picturing in our heads . . . sometimes challenging ourselves to make the use of molds vital to the pieces we were making.” In 1999, Klein and Reid began a collaboration with Eva Zeisel that resulted in a porcelain line that could only have been made using the industrial processes they have mastered. They sum up their process saying, “We want to be the invisible hand that created the thing and, to this end, molds are useful partners.”

Jonathan Adler (www.jonathanadler.com) began working with clay in high school; his resume says, “Spends entire adolescence in basement of parent’s modern house throwing pots.” He then went to Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, to study art history, but spent most of his time at the Rhode Island School of Design making pots. In 1993, he showed a group of pots at Barney’s where they were a huge success, which led to more and more orders. Adler soon realized he wasn’t cut out to make the same pots all day. His solution to his production problems was to seek help from Aid To Artisans (www.aidtoartisans.org), which is a nonprofit organization that connects artists in the US to artisans in developing countries. In this instance, Adler was connected to a small clay studio in Peru. Again from his resume: “1997, flies to Peru and discovers paradise-a beautiful workshop by the sea with parrots and gardens and incredible artisans, creative explosion ensues.” Currently, the prototypes for each piece are developed at the New York studio and then shipped to Peru. The Peruvian artisans create molds and the line is cast and finished. Today, Adler is a designer working in numerous mediums, much like Russell Wright did in the last century.

Going forward the clay worker, whatever they call themselves, will be confronted with the realities of what might be called the new normal. The totally-made-by-hand object has become, by nature of its cost, a luxury product only available to more affluent consumers. It is certainly important that this facet of our field continue. It is, after all, how skills are passed on. However, the traditional collector group that has fueled the demand for studio pots is aging and fading from the scene. This, coupled with rapidly changing levels of appreciation for handmade ceramics (the mark of the hand is no longer the selling point), presents today’s clay worker with a marketplace that little resembles that of the last generation. These indicators, along with well-designed industrial tools and an ample number of studio models, suggest the studio potter can, with thoughtful care, embrace a broader approach to how their work is produced, and can continue to honor their materials.

"VULNERABLE" reflects my continuing exploration of threatened and endangered species. The content of this body of work is inspired by the interconnectedness, or lack thereof, between man and the natural world—specifically our relationship with animals.

FOCUS ON SERGEI ISUPOV

SERGEI ISUPOV will present three new sculptures in THE ILLUSCULPTORS. His solo show, "Androgyny", is currently on view at the Daum Museum of Art, Sedalia, MO.

Continuing to build on this series, the recent heads are the largest and most complex to date.

FOCUS ON JASON WALKER

JASON WALKER continues his impressive series "Human Made Wild" with new works A Hand in Two Worlds, shown here, and Stopping to sniff the flowers in my concrete shoes, I gave a crust of bread to John Muir. Both on view at SOFA Chicago, November 5-8.

"The pieces for this show are simply explorations of this idea. The imagery was gathered by walking 75 miles of trail through Yosemite National Park and many more miles of concrete through Chicago Illinois, two iconic American landscapes, with my sketchbook. The pieces are an attempt to merge these two opposing places together to say it is time to rethink our perceptions of nature, culture, wilderness and civilization, in hopes we can once again reinstate our own naturalness and perhaps one day find balance between ourselves, and the planet."

GERARDO MONTERRUBIO, Monterrubio interprets the gritty Los Angeles street culture through the incorporation of drawing and painting with ceramic sculpture into recognizable objects such as spray paint cans, coffee tins and skulls.

MAX LEHMAN, Santa Fe based, Lehman produces cartoon like figures draw on imagery from southwest neighborhoods he grew up in and the Hispanic, Native American and contemporary art cultures he is immersed in now as a professional artist. He combines iconography from the Maya, Aztec, Teotihuacan and South American Pre-Columbian cultures with urban graffiti and punk rock
