| | KURT WEISER Featured Speaker at SOFA Chicago A View of Nature: The Ceramic Art of Kurt Weiser Saturday: November 7th, 1 p.m. Followed by In Booth Conversation at 2:30
This illustrated lecture will provide an overview of Weiser's work over the last four decades. "In the beginning of my career I concentrated on producing functional ceramics, which were inspired by Asian pottery traditions, using a wide range of firing and building techniques. Towards the end of my tenure as Resident Director of the Archie Bray Foundation, my work shifted to slip cast porcelain vessels. In 1989, when I accepted a teaching position at Arizona State University, my work took a dramatic turn. Paying homage to the rich European and Asian china painting traditions, I began to paint surreal, lushly painted porcelain vases, creating provocative and unnerving narrative vessels. International travel and residences have had a significant impact on my work as well."

Weiser, a Regents' Professor in the ASU Herberger College of the Arts, maintains a studio in Tempe, Arizona. An unassuming genius, the artist is known for his technical mastery and inventive pottery forms. This hallmark exhibition comprises 40 ceramic sculptures drawn from the ASU Art Museum permanent collection, private and public collections nationwide and spans 30 years of creative excellence. Peter Held, curator of ceramics, curates the exhibition.
